C2CC project will be presented within a “Science on Stage” event, as an example of new materials for Circular Economy in the Automotive field. The event will hosted within selection of Italian projects for next year European competition. The event can be followed at following link, on 16th of April, starting at 5pm CET.
Today the research activity on basalt reinforced composites has been mentioned in an article on “Il Sole 24 Ore”, the Italian national daily business newspaper owned by Confindustria. Basalt and basalt-derived mineral fibres are proposed as an environmental-friendly alternative to carbon, since can be recast and reused in the original application.
C2CC partnership is currently uploading the technical and financial reporting about 2020 activities. Although there were some Covid-related delays, all main programmed activities were performed and in particular:
- the development of C2C recyclable prepregs;
- the use of them for laminating a complete front bonnet demonstrator;
- the study of treatments on prepreg scraps and cured materials, to recover secondary raw materials;
- the collection of main data for LCA study;
- dissemination of activities and results

The production of totally C2C recyclable prepreg is a bit late on the original schedule of project C2CC, mainly due to the high requirements in term of Tg associated to front bonnet (main C2CC project demonstrator). In 2020 it was necessary to move to a still under development cleavable hardener, for increasing Tg of derived cleavable epoxies. In order not to delay all other project activites, Filava fibre was associated to biobased PFA resin in Gaiker, to allow AM composites to test the production of a complete front bonnet. A complete mechanical characterisation of Filava-PFA was performed, to allow the definition of a suitable ply-book.
Gaiker has finished the production of panels for comparing mechanical performances of C2C recyclable fibres.
Glass, basalt and Filava (a Basalt-Derived Mineral produced by ENEA) were associtated with cleavable epoxies to evaluate mechanical characteristics. Mechanical tests will be up to ENEA. Considering automotive expectations, several tests are needed (compression, tensile, in plane-shear testing). The results will allow to identify the more promising fibre for continuing the activity.
In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and to ensure the safety of participants, the Open day of the ENEA TEMAF laboratories, previously scheduled for May 11th, 2020 will be postponed to a later date. Updates will be communicated as soon as possible.
The project activities are still advancing in line with time plan, by adopting social distancing measures.
Now, more than ever, the automotive industry needs innovative and sustainable lightening solutions, like those C2CC project is developing.
C2CC’s updates will be presented to citizenship and students during the open day of the ENEA TEMAF laboratories (within the Faenza XX Scientific and Technological Week). The event is scheduled for 11 May at 2.30 pm: the ongoing project activities, the main pilot lines and the interaction with the other related research projects, dealing with weight reduction and new composite materials development, will be illustrated.
C2CC project activities will be presented at a workshop organised in Milan on the 20th of February by Assocompositi, about the issue of Sustainability of Composite Materials. The company presentations will be held by:
- Korec (thermochemical process for fiberglass recycling);
- Gees Recycling;
- Cetma (optimization of composite components from recycling);
- Cormatex (non-fabrics obtained from recycled fibres from composite materials);
- ENEA-Temaf Lab (C2CC and Firemat projects).
The C2CC project coordinator presented a talk with the title “Sustainability and recycling of composites materials: industrial examples”.
